In May of 2024, an urgent plea reached us about an eight-month-old cat with devastating injuries. Her fur and skin were scorched along her head and side, the tip of her tail fractured, and her left ear was so badly burned that part of it fell off when we initially examined her.
We named her Phoenix.
Inspired by the mythical bird that rises from the ashes, because even in her pain she was already rising. She purred when comforted and never stopped fighting.
When we first saw Phoenix in person, it was hard to process just how much pain she must have been in, and just how well she was handling it. It doesn't matter how many times you see it, it never ceases to amaze just how resilient animals can be. It's equally inspiring as it is heartbreaking. We don't know if what she suffered was at the hands of a person, or the result of a tragic accident. But the severity and pattern of her injuries raised difficult questions, we didn't have answers to. Regardless, what mattered most was getting her the help she needed.
Soon after coming to us, we had her see the vet right away to ensure she received the care she needed. We knew the road to recovery was not going to be quick. She had to endure repeated debriding of dead tissue and daily wound care. But despite everything, Phoenix's gentle spirit shone through, and she accepted help with remarkable calm. When she was stable enough, a foster opened their home to her where she could receive more consistent care and attention for her burns.
As Phoenix began to heal, we noticed her petite frame was changing. An X-ray confirmed what we had started to suspect; she was pregnant and had been carrying kittens through her entire ordeal. She was very close to delivering, so we adjusted her care to support both mother and babies, increasing her nutrition and monitoring her closely. Not long after, Phoenix delivered five healthy kittens. And once again, Phoenix reminded us just how resilient animals truly are.
All five of Phoenix's kittens grew up strong and healthy, and found wonderful adoptive homes. Phoenix continued to heal too; her wounds closed, and soft new fur covered her once-injured skin. In the end, Phoenix was adopted by her foster mom.
The hands that helped her heal became the hands that held her forever.
